Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a spiral-shaped bacterium that lives in the stomach lining and is one of the most common chronic infections worldwide. It can survive stomach acid by producing enzymes that protect it, and over time it may cause inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), ulcers in the stomach or small intestine, and in some cases increase the risk of stomach cancer. Many people carry H. pylori without symptoms, but when problems occur, treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics and acid-lowering medicines, sometimes supported by diet and natural therapies.
Important Note
Natural therapies may reduce symptoms and bacterial load, but they rarely fully eradicate H. pylori by themselves. Most experts recommend testing and treating confirmed infection with antibiotic + acid suppression therapy (e.g., triple or quadruple therapy). Using natural agents as adjuncts to improve effectiveness and gut health.
Broccoli Sprouts (Sulforaphane)
Sulforaphane has antibacterial activity against H. pylori and helps protect stomach lining from inflammation and oxidative damage. Clinical studies show broccoli sprout consumption reduces H. pylori colonization and improves gastric inflammation scores.
Mastic Gum (Pistacia lentiscus resin)
Used for centuries in the Mediterranean. Some trials show mastic gum can suppress or even eradicate H. pylori at doses of 350–1000 mg twice daily for several weeks.
Green Tea & Polyphenols
EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate): Shows anti–H. pylori activity in lab studies. Drinking green tea may help reduce bacterial growth and gastric inflammation.
Probiotics
Strains studied: Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Saccharomyces boulardii. Reduce antibiotic side effects (like diarrhea), improve eradication rates by 5–15% when used with triple therapy.
Honey (esp. Manuka honey)
Contains antibacterial compounds that can inhibit H. pylori in vitro. May be soothing for gastritis symptoms.
Cranberry Extract
Polyphenols can block H. pylori from attaching to stomach lining. Some studies show cranberry juice or capsules improve eradication rates when combined with antibiotics.
Curcumin (Turmeric)
Anti-inflammatory and may inhibit H. pylori growth. Used as part of combination nutraceutical regimens in some studies.
Diet & Lifestyle Support
- Avoid irritants: Limit NSAIDs, alcohol, and smoking — all worsen gastritis.
- Eat anti-inflammatory foods: Colorful vegetables, berries, omega-3 sources.
- Manage stress: Stress can worsen ulcer symptoms and delay healing.
