PDO thread therapy is a quick procedure with mild side effects and a short recovery time. The results are quick and continue to improve with time. The threads have preventive, healing properties and long lasting effects via their stimulation of natural collagen.
The threads are made of polydioxanone (PDO) which is a dissolvable suture material that stimulates the production of type 1 collagen over subsequent weeks to months. The threads are made in the USA and made of the best quality of monofilament thread making them unlikely to harbor bacteria so the risk of infection is very low.
PDO threads are used primarily for faces and necks but they can also be used in various body parts for subtle lifting and skin texture improvement while encouraging collagen production for more volume in treated areas. They come in a variety of sizes and textures to customize treatments.
PDO threads are not an alternative to a facelift. They are another tool to add to the many things we offer at Bellezza such as lasers, Botox, fillers etc.
Smooth and twist threads
Smooth and twist threads are used for adding volume or tightening to skin, especially to the midface. They can treat acne scarring, stretch marks, crepey skin, marionette lines, downturned oral commissures, nasolabial folds, glabellar lines, the chin and submental lines.
Lifting threads are typically used to provide a literal lift to the jowl, brow or jawline. They can enhance cheeks or other body parts.
Ideal candidates for PDO threads
The ideal candidate for PDO threads have mild to moderate sagging of the skin due to volume loss or skin laxity. They may not be taking blood thinners, and care needs to be taken with anti-inflammatories, steroids or omega-3 supplements. They may not be fighting a current infection such as sinusitis or upper respiratory infection, or have current rash or cold sore in treatment area.
Other aesthetic treatments must be timed appropriately around PDO threads. Wait at least 2 weeks after botox or dermal filler procedures before doing PDO threads. No laser treatments for 10 weeks after PDO threads and no microneedling or massage to the area for 4-6 weeks after PDO threads.
Discomfort at the injection site is normal and may last several days or longer after treatment. With the lifting threads people might occasionally feel a slight stinging sensation as the thread settles in. Bruising and swelling is normal and expected especially with the lifting threads. The smooth and twist threads have minimal amounts of swelling and bruising. Asymmetry and irregularity of the tissues treated is common and should resolve.
It may take 2 weeks or longer for the treatment effect to be noticeable. The wrinkles begin to smooth, the pores in the treated areas narrow and the skin becomes more elastic. Tissue changes will improve for months with noticeable lifting. The lifting threads can last 12-24 months depending on the age of the patient and the metabolic activity of the skin cells.
